Resident schedules and patient volume vary by year in training. Interns begin with a patient load of 4 patients per half-day during the first 6 months, 6 during the second half of the Year 1, 8-9 in Year 2, and 10 in Year 3. Each resident works with 2 medical assistants that work closely with both patients and providers. Resident orientation includes the chance for all residents to join in a scavenger hunt and meet all the wonderful clinic staff!
Clinicians at LFPC use the Epic electronic health record, which provides access to many of our patients’ outside medical records, including those from specialists at Stanford and UCSF, and facilitates coordination of care across providers. Residents have regular Epic training and coaching sessions that are built into Education time throughout the year in order to pick up “tips and tricks” and ways to optimize the platform.
In-house social workers help manage vulnerable patients in collaboration with residents. Since our social workers are right down the hall, we can perform “warm hand-offs” when we encounter a patient with a particular need for resources or additional support.
Attorneys from the California Rural Legal Assistance program are on-site at LFPC every week to provide free legal consultations to our patients, providing assistance and advocacy on issues such as housing, employment and labor, education, etc.
During Year 1, interns lead group prenatal visits for moms-to-be. Interns facilitate educational discussions about a wide range of maternity care topics including nutrition and safety, breastfeeding, contraceptive options, and many others.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, LFPC has adapted our care delivery systems. Telemedicine visits using secure platforms have temporarily replaced most in-person visits. Although we miss being able to see all our patients in person, it turns out there are a great deal of useful skills to learn in the world of telemedicine! Telemedicine visits include telephone as well as video encounters.
