Orthopedic Technician
Overview
Natividad is currently seeking to fill a full-time Orthopedic Technician. Under general supervision this incumbent assist in the delivery of orthopedic care through application, removal and maintenance of casts, dressings, traction and other orthopedic devices.

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE
Will have proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Working Knowledge of:
- Techniques and practices for applying, maintaining and removing orthopedic devices and materials used including plaster and synthetic casting materials, high and low temperature plastics and orthopedic soft goods
- Sterile techniques and instrument preparation
- Indications and contraindications of various forms of orthopedic treatment
- Cast care and hygiene during cast immobilization
- Radiology as it pertains to the duties of an Orthopedic Technician
- Apply, revise and remove casts, strapping braces traction equipment
- Instruct in proper cast care and hygiene
- Understand and implement physicians orders for treatment
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with patients and staff
- Maintain sensitivity to patient discomfort inconvenience
- Interpret simple fractures and dislocations on radiologic films.
Responsible For
THE SIGNIFICANT DUTIES OF THE POSITION ARE AS FOLLOWS:
- Assists in the preparation of patients for examination by the treating physician
- Applies and removes routine limb and body casts; assembles, applies and maintains routine forms of hospital in-patient traction
- Applies therapeutic strappings, e.g., Parlik harness, slings, thumb spica, figure of 8 brace, Ace bandages
- Applies traction strapping for applying traction to extremities and applies head halter for cervical traction
- Apply splints, checks and changes casts and dressings and fits and applies orthopedic soft good, e.g., cervical collars and lumbar supports
- Assists the Orthopedic Surgeon by setting up the table and preparing instruments
- Performs postoperative procedures such as suture removal and pin removal
- Instructs patients on proper cast care, crutch training, skin care and hygiene
- Performs nursing procedures such as sterile and non-sterile procedures, dressings, checking vital signs, range of joint movement
- Keeps the Orthopedic Clinic and storage areas in the hospital clean and functional
- Keeps inventory of equipment and supplies; orders supplies and repairs as required
Additional Requirements
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Natividad requires that all incumbents pass a pre-employment physical/medical assessment.
- Natividad will conduct a thorough background and reference check process which includes a Department of Justice fingerprint check.
- Employees who drive on County business to carry out job related duties must possess a valid CA Driver License for the class vehicle driven and clean driving record.
- Employees must have and show their original Social Security Card and a valid CA Driver License or CA State ID prior to the first day of work.
- Incumbents may be required to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays;
- Incumbents may be required to work with potentially hazardous and infectious substances.

Educational Requirements
EXAMPLES OF EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION/TRAINING:
Any combination of training, education and/or experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities and required conditions of employment listed above is qualifying. An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is:
Education:
Completion of an orthopedic training program or related allied health program (i.e., RN,PA, LVN, Surgical Technician or Radiology Technician).
AND
Experience:
Two years of experience in a hospital, medical office or clinic working directly in treatment of orthopedic patients.
Certificate: Possession of an Orthopedic Technologist Certification (OTC) issued by the National Board for Certification of Orthopedic Technologist (NBCOT) is desirable.
